Connecting Morocco's two premier surf destinations, the journey from Essaouira-Mogador Airport (ESU) south to Taghazout is one of the most scenic road trips in North Africa. Landing at ESU provides a serene, low-stress entry point for travellers bound for Taghazout Bay, Anchor Point, and Tamraght. The route follows the legendary coastal N1 highway for 145 kilometres, hugging Atlantic cliffs, passing through the argan biosphere reserve, and skirting the famous banana groves of Tamri before dropping into Taghazout's sun-drenched bay in just over two hours.

How to get there
Because public buses (CTM or Supratours) depart only from Essaouira town centre and take over 3.5 hours, a pre-arranged private transfer (from €75) is by far the fastest and most comfortable method. Your driver meets you at the airport arrivals gate with a name sign, loads your bags and surfboards into an air-conditioned vehicle, and drives you directly to your Taghazout hotel or surf camp. Shared grand taxis require changing cars at Tamanar or Agadir and are cumbersome with luggage.
Arrival tips
The coastal road has winding cliff sections between Tamanar and Tamri. If you are prone to motion sickness, sit in the front passenger seat. Keep your camera handy for the coastal views and climbing argan goats.
Plan your arrival
- Meet your driver holding a name sign inside Essaouira airport arrivals.
- Load your luggage and surf equipment into the private vehicle.
- Enjoy the spectacular 2h 15m drive along the coastal N1 road.
- Arrive directly at your resort, surf camp, or apartment in Taghazout.
Trying to take public transport from the airport to Taghazout with surfboards. You would need to take a taxi to Essaouira bus station, wait hours for an intercity bus, and change again.
Ask your transfer driver for a quick stop at the Tamri banana roadside stalls for sweet mini bananas and fresh Moroccan mint tea.
Good to know: 145 km along the Atlantic highway; private transfers start from €75 with surfboard storage; direct, scenic, and hassle-free.
