Landing at Rabat-Salé Airport (RBA) is comfortably the calmest arrival into any major Moroccan city. The airport sits just 10 km northeast of the capital across the Bouregreg river in Salé. Because passenger numbers are lower than Casablanca or Marrakech, passport control and baggage claim are usually wrapped up in under twenty minutes. From the terminal exit, central Rabat is an easy 15-to-20 minute drive along the wide river boulevard.
What surprises most first-time visitors is that Rabat and Salé are twin cities separated only by water: your flight lands in Salé, crosses the modern Hassan II Bridge, and enters the capital. Whether you are staying in a riad in the historic Medina, a ministry hotel in Hassan, or a modern suite in Agdal, sorting your transport before exiting the terminal makes the whole arrival effortless.
Compare your options
| Your options | Price from | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer Recommended 20 min | €16 · 170 MAD | Late arrivals, families, or guests staying in Medina riads |
| Airport grand taxi 20 min | €14 · 150 MAD | Travellers carrying cash dirhams ready to ride |
| ALSA Airport Express Bus (Line AE) 35 min (Rabat-Ville) · 45–50 min (Rabat-Agdal) | €2.3 · 25 MAD | Solo budget travellers heading to Rabat-Ville station |
How to get there
You have three primary options. An official grand taxi from the terminal rank costs a prefecture-regulated flat rate of 150 MAD daytime and 200 MAD night/evening (roughly €14–19). Taxis take dirhams cash only, so ensure you have local currency ready. A pre-booked private transfer starts from €16 (≈170 MAD), includes real-time flight tracking, and places a professional driver inside the arrivals hall with a name sign — ideal if you arrive late or are heading to a riad inside the pedestrian-only Medina where a driver can coordinate porter assistance.
Solo budget travellers can opt for the ALSA Airport Express Bus (Line AE), which runs for a flat 25 MAD (≈€2.30, 40 MAD return) directly to Gare Rabat-Ville on Avenue Mohammed V and terminates at Gare Rabat-Agdal TGV.
Arrival tips
Where you are dropped off depends on your accommodation. Modern hotels in Hassan, Agdal, and Souissi offer direct kerbside drops at the lobby. If you are staying in the historic Medina or the Kasbah of the Udayas, vehicles cannot drive into the narrow stone alleys: ask your driver to drop you at the nearest gate — usually Bab El Had, Bab Bouiba, or Bab Laalou for the Medina, or the main entrance arch for the Kasbah.
Arrange in advance for your riad host to meet you at the gate, as GPS signals can struggle inside the ancient walls.
Plan your arrival
- Before landing, note your hotel's exact district and, for a medina riad, its nearest gate (e.g. Bab El Had or Bab Laalou).
- Clear customs in the compact arrivals hall (usually 15–20 minutes) and withdraw 200–400 MAD if taking a taxi or the bus.
- If you pre-booked a transfer, look for your name board immediately past customs; the driver handles bags and takes you straight to the car.
- If taking a grand taxi, walk to the official rank outside Terminal 2 and confirm the regulated 150 MAD (day) or 200 MAD (night) tariff.
- If taking the express bus, buy your 25 MAD ticket from the driver outside the terminal and ride to Gare Rabat-Ville (~35 min) or Gare Rabat-Agdal TGV (~45–50 min; check timetable on alsa.ma).
Assuming city blue 'petit taxis' can pick you up at the airport arrivals rank. Petit taxis can only drop off outbound passengers; for arrivals, only licensed white grand taxis are authorized to operate from the terminal rank.
Specify your exact neighbourhood to your driver before setting off — Hassan, Agdal, Medina (Bab El Had), or Souissi. Rabat has security perimeters around government ministries and royal palaces; giving the driver the specific district prevents unnecessary loops around one-way ministerial zones.
Good to know: Short and simple; grand taxis charge a regulated 150 MAD by day (200 MAD night), while the express bus costs 25 MAD (40 MAD return).
